I inverted the Wind Rose and the title of this post to accentuate the downwind direction in the area… The Acreage cancer cluster appeared downwind of the municipal solid waste incinerators, which also incinerate lots of heavy metals along with the solid waste. SW1 incinerator started up 5 years before the cancers began showing up in children. Baghouses, such as those used in SW1, do not capture 100% of the particulate, especially during startups, shutdowns and malfunctions, fabric tears, etc. Incinerator emissions will contain heavy metal particulate, and PM 2.5 can travel for miles downwind before settling on, well, us. Winds predominantly come off the Atlantic Ocean from the East/Southeast. Solid waste incinerator emissions can also contain radioactive particulate from medical and industrial waste if not detected and removed before incineration. Heavy metals and radioactive material can also end up in the waste effluent from the plant.
