“FIREFIGHTERS are relieved at a decision to permanently close the Success Fire Station and relocate staff after four cases of kidney cancer within six years. But they say they may never know what caused so many cases of the deadly disease at the one site between 2008 and 2014.
Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Wayne Gregson said that despite extensive testing the cause of the cancers remained a mystery, and he could not in good faith send firefighters back to work at the Hammond Rd site in Perth’s south.
He had also ordered a review of the department’s health monitoring programs to ensure all WA firefighters were given “all available support in the prevention and detection of cancers’’. Two of the four cancer victims at Success have had kidneys removed. A third firefighter, Rob Reed, died in 2009, less than a year after he was first diagnosed. A fourth was diagnosed last year.
